The Jackson Adult Kickball and Social Services League
Shelbie Yates is an executive assistant at Sable Investments in Madison, Mississippi, and a master of business administration candidate at Mississippi College. Beyond her studies and professional responsibilities at Sable, Shelbie Yates engages with a variety of Mississippi community groups and organizations, including Jackson Adult Kickball and Social Services.
The Jackson Adult Kickball and Social Services league was first established in Clinton, Mississippi, in 2012. Following a brief hiatus and relocation to Jackson, league founders Jenny Breaux and Michael Curran had initially hoped to field four teams, but wound up with enough participants to fill 12 rosters on the first day of competition. Taking place at LeFleur's Bluff State Park from seven to nine on Monday evenings, the league now fields 20 teams made up of more than 400 players over three divisions.
Players range in age, background, and athletic experience, and games are played with a mixture of competitiveness and fun. While teams play to win, the primary objective of the league is to help professionals unwind and get exercise following a long day at work. Games are played without umpires or refs, and any disputes are settled with games of rock, paper, scissors.
