Healthy Cooking Oils

The executive assistant to the CEO and chairman of Sable Investments in Mississippi, Shelbie Yates schedules meetings, handles travel arrangements, welcomes guests, and organizes daily calendars. When she’s not busy with work, Shelbie Yates of Mississippi enjoys cooking and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Below are some of the healthiest oils with which to cook:

- Canola oil. Although canola oil is high in monounsaturated fat, it has one of the lowest levels of saturated fat and is a good source of polyunsaturated fat. Made from rapeseed, canola oil has a neutral flavor that makes it a good option for everything from stir-frying to baking.

- Olive oil. A popular cooking oil, olive oil is created by pressing olives. Among cooking oils, olive oil has the highest percentage of monounsaturated fats. It also contains plenty of polyphenols, a type of antioxidant that improves heart health.

- Peanut oil. Featuring a similar polyunsaturated fat content as canola oil, peanut oil has less saturated fat than palm and coconut oils. It is very flavorful and usually reserved for cooking Asian-inspired dishes, such as stir-fries.

- Avocado oil. This type of cooking oil is more expensive than most types, but it’s suitable for roasting, sauteing, and grilling, thanks to its ability to handle high cooking temperatures. Additionally, avocado oil is low in polyunsaturated fat, but high in monounsaturated fat.
